It’s my turn in the spotlight at Oscraps and I have a freebie and a series of really cool challenges all week long!

Challenge Theme:

Your Family Tree {Redefined} (aka this is definitely NOT your grandmother's family tree)

Okay ladies, get ready for a whole new approach to thinking about genealogy! As much as I love the idea of tracing and recording my family tree, the very thought of it completely and totally overwhelms me (to the point where I won't even touch it)!!! I know a whole bunch of you can relate to this, so I came up with a set of goals to help me get focused on what I really want to accomplish in the (rare and fleeting) time that I spend recording my family's history. I hope these goals will help inspire you this week as we take on five challenges that are designed to get your family tree & history recording started!

Here are the goals:

1) Define your family tree the way you see it right now, what it looks like at this moment in time
2) Celebrate each of the members of your family tree and capture who they are right now
3) Record your family's story through photos and journaling
4) Build connections between the generations, members of your family tree from the present and past

The good news - this is nothing radical - you're already doing this right now in your everyday scrapping!! The secret to this approach to genealogical scrapping is focusing your energy on the present, celebrating the people who YOU love right now and recording who they are right now, THEN connecting all these wonderful people to the people you know (or other family members knew) from your family's recent and distant past.

Over this week I will be posting five challenges (one per day for five days) to help inspire you! All of these challenges will be twofold - the first challenge will help you record something from your family's present, while the second challenge will give you the perfect opportunity to build connections between the generations of your family tree in a second layout!

It’s my turn in the spotlight at Oscraps and I have a super cool challenge and freebie for everyone!

Challenge Theme: Connections

A few months ago I was looking through a package of old photos my Uncle had sent to me. They were photos of my grandfather, a man I didn’t have a chance to meet as he passed away years before I was born. The pictures are few and very small, but still an incredible documentation of the year he served in the Canadian Military during WWII, an experience I was told he didn’t speak much about during his lifetime. Within these pictures I found one that I immediately recognized, a tiny photo my grandfather had taken during the time he was stationed in Europe. It was of Edinburgh castle, a photo he was probably moved to take knowing that he was standing in the city his new wife’s family had lived in before they immigrated to Canada. In my own collection of photos from a recent trip to Scotland I had taken almost the very same picture. Though I never had a chance to meet my grandfather, it was pretty cool to know that at two very different moments in history we both stood in nearly the same spot and taken a photo of a place that had a special meaning within our family.

Your Challenge:

Your challenge this week is to go through your photos and find TWO that represent the theme of "connections":

1) Draw a connection between the past and the present: Someone you know today (it could be you) may share a personality trait, skill, physical feature, experience or event that connects you/them to someone from the past. Use two photos - one from the past and one from the present - in your layout (feel free to add more photos).

2) Draw a connection within the present: Two people you know today (it could be you) who share a personality trait, skill, physical feature, experience, event or even a unique bond. Use two photos - both from the present - in your layout (feel free to add more photos).Create at least one layout using this theme of "connections" using any of my products!

Yes it's real - my honey staring in his very own layout! Actually, he does manage to "star" in a fair number of my layouts, most of which I don't post in my online gallery simply because of the mushy-gushy factor lol. Well, okay, one did find it's way into the February issue of Digital Artist Magazine, but of course it was in fine company within the Valentine's issue where mush always abounds. As you can see (read), this one is less mushy and perhaps more cheeky, but he's got a great sense of humor and laughed when he read the journaling. And yes, it's all true, despite all of his academic, athletic and professional accomplishments, the mastering of these two little sticks continues to elude him. Ah well, love does conquer all and we manage to continue in marital merriment despite this glaring imperfection (teehee) :P (to read the journaling click on the layout and it will take you to my gallery).

One last thing - Zen Garden is on sale for two more days!

My Guest Goddess spot at Scrapartist has begun and I'm so excited to work with such a wonderful, talented team of designers and layout artists! If you're interested here is my welcome interview at SA and here is the link to my Scraplift Challenge. Here's a peek my first official layout as a GG (I used Laurie Ann's beautiful Slice of Heaven Mini Kit):

The photo is of my daughter sleeping at a B&B we stayed in which was close to the historical area of Venice, Italy (she had such a great time running along the narrow streets and canals). The photo blended into the papers is one of the dozens of pictures I snapped from our short time in Venice. It was such a beautiful place, the canals, the colours, the people - my absolute favourite stop in Italy and one I hope to return to one day.

Just a quick note to let everyone know I'm still here lol! The last few months have been busy, but wonderful! We had an incredible adventure in May and part of June travelling around France and Italy (2500 photos later, aaaack, lol!) We then hurried home to several busy weeks filled with my daughter's ballet practices, dress rehearsals and a weekend of recitals (plus her graduation from Nursery school!)

At this moment I am busy preparing for many exciting projects in the next few months (I'll fill you in as the time comes)!! I CAN tell you that my designer spotlight at Oscraps is quickly approaching and I'm in the process of putting together a really cool challenge and even cooler freebie for everyone!

In the meantime, I will take two seconds to do a double toot, lol! I have a layout published in the Summer issue of Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine:

I'm so excited!! These calls were among the very first I had ever applied to, so I was over the moon to hear about the acceptences (and be published in a magazine!!)

...all of my NSD shopping, well apparently NOT, lol! Here's the last of the deals I grabbed before all the sales ended!

Madame Mim and Milla Designs Enchanted Forest (I had forgotten how much I wanted this one, so glad I remembered to pick it up!!)

I saw an ADORABLE layout at DST this weekend with this kit, and knew I had to grab this one too (Kate, Birgit & Catrine`s Come Out And Play)

And finally, I NEEDED (well, more like WANTED lol) one more ADORABLE monkey kit (by Kay Miller, I can't get enough of her stuff now lol!) I literally stumbled upon this one this morning, after following a link to the Shabby Pickle for another product! Glad I found it!

I did notice a HUGE theme in my spending choices - WHIMSY! I love anything unique, magical and whimsical (and so does my daughter). I have YEARS of scrapping to catch up on (not that I'm in a rush) and now plenty of supplies to keep my busy for a long while!! It's so much easier to scrap when I'm working with quality stuff - it totally inspires me and gets my mojo workin'! Now all I need is a better organizational system lol! I'm seriously considering picking up ACDSee in the near future lol!

I also wanted to give a LOUD shout out to EVERYONE who visited my shoppe this weekend! THANK YOU for your support for my art/designs!! It is SO inspiring and such an honor to see my products used your layouts! My daughter has recently discovered the monkey bars and she is totally HOOKED, so I KNOW I'll soon have plenty of pics to scrap with this kit!!

Phew! That was a LOT of shopping and I think I'm just about done! I can't wait to use each and every one of these awesome new goodies!!

So there was this little contest over at ScrapArtist and all I needed to do was scrap with my favorite ScrapArtist supplies and they would hand me THIS amazing kit to scrap my second layout!

I admit it, I have never been able to resist a GORGEOUS kit, especially one that is free! And of course, I LOVE any excuse to scrap, and used this opportunity to use two of my gazillion unscrapped travel photos!

You can just imagine my surprise and excitement when I heard I was chosen to be one of the Guest Goddesses at ScrapArtist for the month of June! I'm SO thrilled and honored and can't wait to dive into all the fun (and scrapping) for a WHOLE MONTH!!

Digital Artist Magazine Toot and New Stuff!!!

I have a layout in the February issue of Digital Artist Magazine!

It's another awesome issue of course, filled with so many gorgeous layouts, tips and tutorials. The one thing I really appreciate about this magazine is the VARIETY of layouts showcased, from clean and beautiful to hodge podge and altered art. In our community there are so many talented scrappers that offer different approaches to capturing our memories. Like with everything else in our lives, it's easy to get caught up or distracted by the trends, which can often be different from our own personal scrapbooking goals and perceptions of what makes a beautiful, complete layout. I love how DAM welcomes a range of scrapping styles, regardless of whether they are considered popular at this very moment. What can I say, I am really inspired by variety :)

Speaking of variety (lol) I'm also pretty excited about my two new paper packs available now in my shoppe!

Look what I did with all the boxes left over from Christmas, lol :)! Brand new in my shoppe! I'm really excited about the cardboard vehicles! I am currently LOVING the digital scrapbooking technique of "extraction" and I am trying to find and create products that work with it!

I also want to send a special shout-out to Peggy who gifted me with many of her new products! Not only is she a talented scrapper, but she is an AMAZING new designer. I can't wait to use these goodies in my layouts! Thank you so much Peggy!

Yay! I’m the designer in the spotlight at Oscraps and I’m so excited! Not only do I have this sweet little freebie for you, but it’s also my BIRTHDAY this week!

Your Challenge:

Take a look around your house, closets, photo albums and memory boxes. Somewhere there’s a special item object worthy to have it’s story told through a layout.

Maybe it’s an object that represents a memory you have of a special person. Perhaps it’s a family heirloom or a cherished toy or book from your childhood. Or maybe the object isn’t quite so old, like your child’s first toy or blanket that you are saving to pass onto him or her when they are older.

Find or take a photo of that object and try journaling about why this object is important to you. Can’t get a photo of the object? Try using a photo of the person or people you associate the object with, or a photo of yourself at the time the object became significant to you.

Your Incentive:

Post your layout in the Oscraps gallery and link it to this thread by midnight PST on Sunday, November 11th. Everyone who participates in this challenge will get a $3 Gift Certificate to my shoppe (via your PM box). Take a peek at the newest item I've uploaded into my shoppe at Oscraps! I was totally in the mood to create something a little whimsical and different from my usual element packs, so out popped these little birdies!

And they have ONE fan already: My daughter fell in love with these birdies when she saw them on my computer screen, then insisted I print and cut each one out for her to play with RIGHT AWAY! Except for the fact that they are now SCATTERED all over my basement floor (lol!), I thought that was a pretty cool moment!

Half Way There!!

Well it is already the middle of the summer and I have NO IDEA where the first half went!!! LOL!! But really, I have no complaints. The weather has been beautiful and we have had many summer adventures and have many more planned in the next month or two. There is one adventure I am REALLY looking forward to (wink, wink Angela!!) I'm sure I'll have stories and pics to share from this very special visit to a super cool friend and fellow designer!!

In the mean time I have enjoyed the down time (when I'm not working) spending my days off outdoors and some of my evenings either scrapping or designing. I have so many albums and pages that I am working on, HOPING to get a complete collection together for a shutterfly book!!

But of course, there are always the distractions. Like a sprinkler to run through, some wild flowers to gather, peppers and beans from my hubby's garden to cook with and a whole box of popsicals to eat!!! YEP, Summer RAWKS!!

BTW - This was pretty cool! My TAG FRAMES made DIGI PICK OF THE DAY (Melissa G's awesome blog).
She said so many sweet things about the frames too! I was pretty darn pleased and I'm so happy she and others have enjoyed those frames! Thanks Melissa!!!

Changes...

It is with sadness that I announce my resignation as a Designer from Elemental Scraps. I have enjoyed my time there and I am so thrilled that I had the wonderful opportunity to work with many talented, hardworking designers and CT Members.

Some of you might be aware that aside from designing, I also work part-time in the field of Social Work. Last week I received news of additional summer funding that I have accepted. This means my mostly evening work will convert to day work with longer hours. With the changes in my work schedule I felt very strongly that I would not have the time nor the energy to keep up with releasing new designs, contributions to ES projects & collaboratives and preparations required for the monthly sales (etc).

For all of my wonderful customers please know that I plan to continue to design throughout the summer. You all have been an incredible support throughout my time at ES and I promise I will return to the Designer circuit as soon as possible! In the mean time, I am looking into various options of making my designs available through my blog. I have several new designs in the works that I would love to release, so watch for news on this blog very soon!

Oh yeah, and I want to get back to doing freebies too!

I HEART Frames (lol!)

I've always been attracted to frames for my layouts. Everything from simple white photo frames to really unique antiqued or distressed mixed media frames. I find it helps me decide how to crop my photo and it gives me a clear theme to work with, depending on the frame I use.

Speaking of frames (lol) here's my newest element pack available right now in my shoppe! It's a set of 7 antique seed pack frames, each with it's own flower or fruit, and most with the actual flower or fruit growing out of the pack! I'm working on a layout right now with one of my favourite frames from this pack. I can't get the layout to look it quite the way I want it just yet - but I will certainly post it when it's done!

I have another busy weekend ahead - another birthday, Father's day and trip into Toronto! My list of "to-be-designed" products is ever growing (and exciting)! I do hope to get to one special item before the weekend is through!

Yep, I had a supersized crush on Colin Firth who played Mr. Darcy in the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice. Okay, I loved the novel even before it became a mini series. But having that vision of Colin Firth now etched in my mind (and heart, teehee) just makes reading it again all the more rewarding (sigh).

And so I was inspired to create these two paper packs, based on my favourite characters from Jane Austen's famous classic novel, now available in my shoppe!

It has been a very busy weekend! But I want to thank EVERYONE who came out to my shoppe last week! I even had the pleasure of meeting a few of you via email - that's always such a highlight for me! A big congratulations to the 2 winners of the $10 Gift Certificates to my shoppe! I'm so thrilled you both were so excited!

Aside from an increase in outdoor family adventures (thanks to the warm weather) I've been busy designing more paper packs - one thing I think my shoppe needs a little more of! It's such a joy to "paint" digitally. I've always enjoyed painting (acrylics & watercolour), so learning to apply these skills to a new canvas (my computer screen) has been a wonderful process of exploration. I'm a huge fan of grunge, shabby, distressing & soft watercolours, so you can expect much of my paper work to reflect that.

There is so much that inspires me! I find it so hard to really find the time I need to bring all of my ideas and brainstorms to fruition. But I'm working on it, one pack at a time! And one layout at a time too. I don't scrap as much as I want to, but I hope to spend more time on this favourite activity this summer.
